Description

No other site in Europe contains such a variety of historic monuments in a beautiful landscape as Fountains Abbey and Studley Royal, Yorkshire's first World Heritage Site. Together the Cistercian Abbey, Georgian Water Garden, medieval Deer Park, Elizabethan Hall and Victorian church offer the visitor an unparalleled opportunity to appreciate the range of England's heritage. The ruins of the Cistercian abbey, which was founded in 1132, are the largest such remains in Europe and provide a dramatic focal point for the elegant ornamental lakes, canals, temples and cascades which provide a succession of dramatic eye-catching vistas in one of the best surviving examples of a Georgian Water Garden. Free guided tours of the Abbey ruins and the Georgian water Garden reveal the estates turbulant history from reformation in the sixteenth century to financial scandal in the early eighteenth century. Children's activity trails are available all year round, and in Spring 2007 a new woodland play area will be open.
