Description
One of the North's most interesting of Historic Houses. Originally built in 1145 with alterations in 16th, 17th and 18th centuries, the priory has been the home of the Earl's of Fauconberg and of the Wombwell family since 1538. The house contains family portraits, furniture, china and belongings of this family, who were at various times: Chaplin of Henry VIII; fought against Cromwell, then married his daughter Mary; Ambassadors to France and Italy; took part in the Charge of the Light Brigade (and survived) during the Crimean War; lost two sons while serving in the army - one in India, the other in South Africa - because of a cursed room in the Priory. The house is a delightful mixture of different periods including original priory wall and floor and is set in outstanding countryside with views across the lake to the White Horse carved in the hillside on Sutton Bank - the ideal setting for weddings and receptions. The extensive grounds contain a large water garden with Rhododendrons, Azaleas and alpines; a walled garden and extensive woodland walks, with other ponds and gardens. Teas and refreshments can be taken in the original kitchens of the Priory.
