Description
Mapledurham House is the historic home of the Blount family and a superb Elizabethan mansion built in 1588 and idyllically situated on the banks of the river Thames. The house contains a fine collection of paintings and portraits, original ceilings and great oak staircases. The beautiful private family chapel, an addition in the 1790s, is decorated in Strawberry Hill Gothick and is a delight. The traditional corn and grist watermill is the last remaining working mill on the river Thames and still produces flour today, which can be purchased in our well-stocked gift shop. Visitors may arrive by boat from nearby Caversham – a pleasant cruise along this most stunning stretch of the Thames. Our tearooms offers cream teas or cakes served in the Old Manor tearooms or on the lawns sloping down to the Thames. Riverside picnic area. Ample parking for cars and coaches. The grounds can also be used for wedding receptions, craft fairs, corporate events etc. Location 4 miles north west of Reading off the A4074. Open Saturdays, Sundays and Bank Holidays from Easter until the end of September and for previously arranged group visits during the week. Admission please call for details.
