Description
A stunning medieval/Tudor Hall (Grade I) described as "one of England's loveliest houses". Given 3 stars by Jenkins 1,000 Best Houses. Noted for its richly carved beams, superb linenfold panelling and 16th century wall paintings. Otley Hall was once the home of the Gosnold family from c.1401. Bartholomew Gosnold voyaged to the New World in 1602 and named Cape Cod and Martha's Vineyard (an account of the voyage is believed to have inspired Shakespeare's Tempest). Gosnold returned in 1607 and founded the Jamestown colony, the first English speaking settlement in the US. The unique 10-acre gardens include historically accurate Tudor re-creations designed by Sylvia Landsberg (author of The Medieval Garden), a moat, a lake and much wildlife including peacocks and swans. Groups and individuals welcome all year round for private guided tours by appointment. Refreshments and lunch can be provided. We are also open for private functions including weddings and dinner parties.
